Characters do not have mechanical skill picks from a predefined list or tree which they rely on. If you want to try something, then we actively encourage you to try it. If it does not feel like something your character should be particularly proficient in, then maybe don’t try too hard, or intentionally fail.
There are no “guaranteed success” skills for such things. Rather talk to Game team and discuss why, based on your character’s back story, they should be able to track the Ylfe moving through the lands, or why they can pick the locks of the chest they have found in the tomb.
So if the rules do not include specific skills, or abilities for your characters to learn, then how do you build a character?
We encourage players to develop their characters as people, rather than as a stat line. To assist with this we have included a list of questions for you to consider. These can help you gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of the character you hope to play.
What archetype do they fit into?
Are they a warrior, a travelling priest, or a cloistered scholar who has been sent to the Witan? This will form the core of the types of stories you will try to tell with them. Warriors looking to find glory through combat, priests spreading their faith to the masses, or scholars looking for some hidden knowledge, all of these are incredible stories to tell.
Where are they from?
Do they hail from the capital in Scardeburg, or did they travel here from the wilderness of Wales? Their homeland is a strong connection to who they are.
Why have they been chosen to attend the Witan?
You are not playing Eorls of the kingdom, so why are you here? Who has sent you? What do you hope to gain from attending this Witan?
What faith do they follow?
Faith is important in the lands and the effects and powers of the Gods have been seen in action in recent times, so which faith do you practice? Do you not subscribe to specific faith, and instead give praise to each of them at any given time. Generally, every person of the allied lands will follow some kind of faith. More information about faith and the Gods of the land can be found in the players guide.
What do they hope to achieve?
Do they seek wealth, knowledge, or glory? Can they achieve their aims in a single endeavour, or are they trying to gain standing over time? Do they wish to find employment in the household of a great noble. Or even find some secrets they can turn to the advantage of their liege…
What secrets do they hold?
Do they have a hidden past they wish not to come out? Have they been known as a coward, called out for lack of faith in their role as a priest, or even been found to have dealt with the enemies of the state?
What is their greatest weakness?
No one person is an island in this world, and as such what do they lack in terms of abilities? What would they need the help of others to achieve?
