We've put together a timeline of the current setting to help you understand the background of the game world. A full timeline with more detailed information can be found in the player guide.
1065 – Edward the Confessor dies. The debate over his succession begins.
1066 – Harold Godwinson is elected the new King of England following a meeting of the Witenagemot in Winchester.
1072 – The Sundering happens. This is a time of great turmoil in the Kingdom which follows a great shaking of the earth. Cornwall is left devastated and shattered into many smaller islands. The Wash is split open and forces itself into an even greater area with water pouring into the Broads and creating a marsh which is almost impassable to those who do not know the way through it. After the earth finally stops shaking the various lords of the land rise up to create their own smaller kingdoms. Harold Godwinson manages to gain a semblance of control by subjugating some of the more vocal lords. Whilst this happens a number of monsters are reported to be wandering the lands.
1074 – The monsters have been confirmed to be wandering the lands and a number of smaller towns have been attacked. Some of these monsters seem to be smaller varieties forming tribes, raiding and scavenging, others are larger creatures seen walking this world on their own. The children of Harald Godwinson die in an attack on their travelling caravan whilst Harold was meeting with his advisors. To ensure a stable governance for the future, Harold adopts Edgar Æthling as his own son.
1079 – Harold Godwinson falls in battle to the dread beast known as Nidgarmr. This beast was said to be 50 feet long, with the ability to shatter a man’s shield in a single blow. Harold led a party of warriors chosen by the Witenagemot to join him in hunting it down. None of these warriors returned, but it is said that they all fell having fought with all their might and courage, and Harold delivering the killing blow to Nidgarmr as he himself died.
1080 – The Witan elects Edgar Æthling as the new King of England and its allies. Having grown up under the leadership and tutelage of Harold Godwinson he is himself a strong leader, which all the nations can accept. He begins a campaign to free the lands of the monsters, continuing in his adopted father’s actions. He selects Scardeburg as his capital due to its castle, and location, forming a good defensive position.
1083 – The Ylfe begin to march out from a hidden base in the Midlands. The Siege of Tig Gucobauc lasts for 3 months until a relief force from Scardeburg, Skeggiburg and Norwic join forces to relieve the besieged town. Following a fierce battle the remaining elves are driven off, escaping through their gates to places unknown.
1087 – Following a period of peace, and rebuilding, the monsters brought out by The Sundering return in greater numbers. Trolls are seen moving in small groups for the first time. The Ylfe are seen marching through the land again in small warbands, but the fear is that they began spreading out to cause panic or amass in another place to attack. There are also sightings of the dead rising from their graves, the bodies of people outcast for their evil ways are seen to once more walk this land. These frightful sights cause King Edgar to call the Witan to select more warriors for the fight, and even allow him to call the Fyrd to take the fight to the larger forces of the enemy.
1099 - King Edgar himself leads a warband to remove the threat of the Draugr known as Wulgan the Butcher. The Oracles of the Marmennill, (fishlike people who live in the Wash) reveal through their visions that the leader of the group who hopes to destroy Wulgan must first maim themselves with the removal of a hand. The bones of this must then be ground up and used in the forging of a new sword, which will have the power to destroy Wulgan. Before anyone can protest, Edgar calls a meeting of the Witan where he cut his own hand off to be used in the creation of this weapon. Taking up this newly forged sword in his (one) hand, Edgar sets off to face Wulgan in combat.
At the height of the battle, Edgar faces Wulgan in single combat. Edgar cuts down Wulgan, yet with his dying breath the Draugr curses Edgar to a horrible wasting death.
1103 – Four years after Edgar defeated Wulgan, the country has seemingly forgotten his curse. Priests and druids have looked to do all they could to remove the curse, but since it has not emerged they thought it just the last hateful act of a hateful creature. How wrong they were. With pain beginning in the location of the missing hand, Edgar becomes sickly to the point of worry for many. He has given no instructions on the succession or called a Witan to this point. He begins ageing quickly, being at the age of fifty two he suddenly looks like he is well into his eighties. Either a way is found to remove this curse from Edgar, the process of finding the next Leader of these allied nations must start.
These are dark and dangerous times. Armies walk the land and monsters prowl in the shadows.
